Community dignity restored as beneficiaries receive title deeds

Mabaso also gave a word of advice to the elderly beneficiaries who received their documents on the day, and emphasised the importance of keeping the document safe.

As promised in a previous interview with the Record, the MMC for Housing in the City of Johannesburg, Mlungisi Mabaso visited the community of Sol Plaatje on Thursday, 10 June to hand over title deeds to beneficiaries.

Mabaso and his office, joined by Ward 127 councillor Sabelo Ngcana met the community at Sol Plaatje Hall and addressed them on the importance of having a title deed, and how crucial it is in securing a future for your family.

“We are here to confirm that the house you were allocated is now officially your house. I want to plead with this community to do anything with their houses but never sell it.

“If you sell your house then you are saying that your children and grandchildren must go back to the informal settlements because they do not have a solid home.

“Part of us handing over these title deeds confirming ownership, we are securing the future for your families and we are asking you as the community to work with us,” said Mabaso.

Mabaso also gave a word of advice to the elderly beneficiaries who received their documents on the day, and emphasised the importance of keeping the document safe.

“This document is very important in such a way that if it is misplaced and finds itself in the wrong hands, you might lose your house. Another person might change the ownership and evict you from your own house, or sell the house and then evict you,” warned Mabaso.

According to Councillor Ngcana, the activities of the day form part of land distribution, and it is a positive move for the community to get their title deeds.

Ngcana also welcomed the representatives from the Housing portfolio together with all the officials from various political parties.

To conclude the events, Mabaso made a special visit to 69-year-old Sarah Mukansi to hand-deliver her title deed as she could not walk to the Sol Plaatje Hall.

In a space of three weeks, Mabaso will be handing over more than 1 000 title deeds to rightful owners who are mostly based on the West Rand, Sol Plaatje area.
