A legend gone too soon – Shaleen Surtie-Richards sadly passes away at 66

To be considered an icon in the entertainment industry not only takes years of hard work and talent, but a persona so welcoming that even people watching you from home feel like they know you.

One such actress is Shaleen Surtie-Richards, whose family has sadly confirmed her death today, Monday, 7 June. The beloved actress lived in Witpoortjie, but was in Cape Town for the filming of the TV series Arendsvlei. Shaleen became a household name as ‘Nenna’ in Egoli and Fiela in the 1988 film Fiela se Kind many years ago, and her passing has been felt heavily throughout the country.

The Surtie family sadly confirmed her passing at 66 years old, and referred to it with ‘great sadness’ and ‘utter shock’. “We have lost a sister, an aunt, a cousin, and a niece. We are trying to process, and come to terms with the news, and to still our broken hearts,” said family spokesperson, Alistair Izobell. “We understand that she was not only in our hearts, but in the hearts of this great nation,” Alistar continued.

It is widely known that Shaleen suffered from heart problems and diabetes, and while her family has said her death may be related to these conditions, they are still waiting for an autopsy to confirm the cause of her death. “All kinds of rumours are flying around as to the cause of death, which is why we would like to emphasise that Ms Surtie-Richards did not commit suicide,” said Alistar.

He shared the Surtie family’s gratitude towards all those who have shared their words of support during this difficult time. “We thank you for the love, support and respect as we prepare for her final curtain call.”

The Kruin Community Voluntary Association (KCVA) is one of the many organisations (and people) that have sent their condolences to the Surtie family. KCVA chairperson, Deon van Wyk, referred to Shaleen as a dear friend and amazing person who was one of the most valued members of the KCVA. “She cared so much for others, and the way she was a part of the KCVA was amazing. We have really lost a very important member of our team,” said Deon.
