Florida Police retrieve replica gun outside Discoverers Hospital

Police have been monitoring the area after an increase in car thefts

While those looking for hope sit waiting patiently, criminal gluttons gorge on any opportunity.

The Gauteng Department of Health launched phase two of their vaccine rollout, choosing Discoverers Community Healthcare Centre as the facility for Region C. The increase in traffic toward the hospital has resulted in many making use of the street parking along Clarendon Road around Roodepark School. A spike of motor vehicle thefts has been the result, with the counter-attack employed by Florida Police showing dividends on 27 May.

“It is true that lately Discoverers has been a hotspot for motor-vehicle theft, and undercover police have been placed as a matter of urgency. On Thursday we tried to apprehend a suspected criminal and while he was running he dropped a black case. In it was a toy gun which was handed to Florida Police as per procedure,” said Florida Police station commander, Colonel Amos Tsotetsi.

While not clear if the gun was used in any incidents in the area, a proactive approach by police proves what can be achieved by having boots on the ground at the right time and place. The new station commander also met with community members outside Fleurhof to address the crime hotspot in their area, reaffirming his desire to build momentum in the fight to reclaim Florida from criminals.
