Armed robbery results in a shootout

An armed robbery leaves residents shaken and one bystander shot

One person was injured during an alleged armed robbery in Javelin Crescent, Weltevreden Park on 21 May. It is alleged that security companies were alerted about a shooting taking place on the corner of JG Strijdom Road and Cornelius Street at Palm Court Shopping Centre.

According to the police report, Clyde Andrews was painting the security gate when he was approached by two armed men. “They dragged him to the bedroom together with his brother’s girlfriend. They pointed them with firearms and they heard others ransacking the house,” explained Honeydew police communications officer, Captain Balan Muthan.

The suspects were jolted when the alarm went off and they took off. Muthan said the victim ran outside and found West Rand reaction Unit whose patrollers were chasing after the suspected getaway car. This resulted in shootout between the criminals and the reaction team, where one bystander was shot.

The suspects reportedly got off with electronic appliances, cosmetics and clothes valued at around R400 000. The suspects sped off in a white Toyota Corolla with an unknown registration plate. A case of attempted murder has been opened
