WATCH: Public warned to be cautious of potentially suspicious silver GTI

The rewards of pillaging the property of others have enabled some to afford some shiny toys.

A video – allegedly taken in Stumke Street – showing the driver of a silver Volkswagen Golf GTI attempting to force open the pedestrian door of a driveway security gate, has been doing the rounds on social media. The video ends before the final outcome is established but the visuals highlight the speed and ease at which possible criminals are able to operate.

In order to avoid harm, the need to be vigilant at all time is paramount, and Roodepoort Police have provided advice on how to secure your immediate surroundings. This list can be printed and displayed anywhere where households may find it important.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• Ensure that all doors are locked at all times and windows are closed when you are not at home.
• If you leave your residence inform family/ neighbours of your intended destination, time you expect to return, and the route you will be driving.
• Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks, ladders, etc that can be used in an attack, are locked away when you do not use them.
• Always keep a torch nearby at night and when you use it, ensure that you do not give away your position.
• If you are unsure about the security status of your home after returning from work or a visit, for example, your dogs do not come to the gate, do not enter your home.
• Identify relatively safe places of refuge, for example the bathroom, toilet or storeroom.
• Involve employees as they are part of the collective strategy.
• Employees must be involved in maintaining security on an equal footing.
• Report suspicious behaviour and information to your blockwatch or security company.
• Clear the areas around the gates of bushes and other hiding places.
• Do not employ casual workers without a reference.
• Ensure that you have a good relationship with your neighbours so that you will be in a good position to support and help each other.
