Health made a priority

More than 100 learners from Princess High School gave up their Saturday to make sure they are healthy, thanks to the Health Screening Day hosted by the Wilro Park Lions Club.

For a lot of parents, getting their children to school during the week is hard enough, but when they are asked to give up their Saturday, that presents a new problem all together.

However, it seems the learners of Princess High School have no problems giving up their prime weekend time for their health. The Lions Club of Wilro Park visited the school on Saturday, 8 May for a Health Screening Day and the response was outstanding. The 118 learners who attended the screening day were tested for diabetes, had their blood pressure taken and their vision checked for free.

This particular health day was hosted at Princess High to help the learners who may not have access to these types of screenings due to financial reasons, so the Lions Club wanted to make sure all the learners had the opportunity to get these important tests easily. Those who need spectacles will be assisted through the Lions Eye Clinic, and the diabetes testing was conducted to pick up any early warning signs.

Convened by Wilro Lion, Lorraine Scheepers, and the Lion’s Health Committee, the day was a huge success. Not only were the screenings conducted, but the Lions Club did their best to educate and encourage the learners to choose a healthy lifestyle. Adding to this topic was guest speaker, Dr Mpho Phalatse, who spoke to the learners about how they can lead healthier lifestyles.

Another guest speaker was a former Princess High learner and Lions volunteer, Joshua Saal who addressed the learners on the issue of cyberbullying, encouraging them to ask for help if they needed it.

Wilro Lions president, Sandy van Heerden, extended her gratitude to Dr Phalatse, all the Lions that were involved, Josh, and the Principal of Princess High for their support and encouragement during the event. She also wanted to extend a special thank you to Pick n Pay Witpoortjie for their donation of a variety of fruit for the learners to enjoy.
