Another cash-in-transit heist in the vicinity of Westgate mall

Suspects fled scene in a white Nissan Almera

Just months before the security upgrades are set to be complete, the urgent need for their installation has not been more apparent.

A security company servicing a tenant at Westgate Super Regional Shopping Centre was robbed in the parking lot outside Entrance 5 on 17 May. Shortly after 4.30pm, the security guard was returning from a routine collection when an armed thief pounced. “When he was about to open the back door of the armoured vehicle, he was approached by a man who pulled a firearm and demanded his service pistol,” confirmed National Police spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili.

Another two men then assisted the gunman and fortunately, there were no explosions, no gunshots and no injuries in the incident. The three thugs then fled the scene in a white Nissan Almera with an undisclosed amount of cash and a firearm.

Colonel Muridili appealed to anyone with information on the incident to please call the Crime Stop number, 086 00 10111, or send tip-offs on the My SAPS app.
