Witpoortjie Community Flea Market celebrates mothers

Sunday, 9 May, might have been Mother’s Day, but the Witpoortjie Community Flea Market decided that one day to celebrate the women who gave us life is just not enough.

The weekly market hosted their Mother’s Day event on Saturday, 8 May, giving last-minute gift buyers the perfect get out of jail free card, while the mothers themselves could enjoy the exciting stalls, delicious food and impressive entertainment. The group of young women who entertained the market-goers may still be in school, but their synchronised afro-pop and hip-hop moves were a lesson to all dancers that hard work and practice really pay off.

The cold, wet morning weather deterred a few of the community members, but those who attended made the market that much more special. As the weather cleared up, the music could be turned back on and more people started to arrive, taking the collection of stalls from a simple market to a community-based day of fun. Thanks to the generous donation of a giant, delicious cake from Pick n Pay Witpoortjie, the mothers had the perfect treat to kick off the Mother’s Day weekend.

A couple of lucky moms were even gifted a few bath essentials to help them in their quest for the relaxation they deserve.

The Witpoortjie Community Flea Market is hosted every Saturday from 9am to 2pm on the section of open grass opposite NG Kerk Culembeeck on Koeberg Street. To find out more about the market, or enquire about stalls, contact the market’s organiser, Roxanne Premchund on 084 207 6549 or by emailing premchund@gmail.com.
