There has been a rise in cellphones snatchings not only on the West Rand but across the country where thieves target unsuspecting cellphone owners in various scenarios.

This video of a cellphone being snatched at a pub in Weltevreden Park on Wednesday, 5 May is a good example of how quick the criminals can be.

They can be seen on the video footage scouting a table. Within seconds they grab what they want and drive off in a car waiting in the parking area.

“When walking in the street, members of the community should keep their phones in their pockets and refrain from holding their phones in their hands; they should rather use an ear piece.

“Criminals look for the opportunity to steal or grab phones since they have become expensive. People should be very cautious when in public places and when answering their phones,” said Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan.

According to the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF), there have been a few reports in the past few weeks of cellphones being snatched and they warn residents to be vigilant when in public.

“This is not an isolated incident; it is happening all over,” said Honeydew CPF PRO, Michael Steyn.

Here are a few tips from the Honeydew CPF on how to avoid becoming a victim:

• When you visit a restaurant never leave your valuables for everyone to see. Don’t place them where thieves can get hold of them, but keep your phone and wallet in your pocket where access is limited.

• Do not use your phone while walking down the street. It not only makes you the perfect target as thieves are seeing your valuables, your attention is not on what is happening in your surroundings.

• When walking to your car in a parking lot, keep your phone and other valuables secured, be aware of people around you and any suspicious behaviour by potential criminals.

• Don’t become a victim, be aware of your surroundings and don’t give criminals the opportunity they are after.

“Please share the information with friends and family; also share it with domestic workers as they often become targets when walking or waiting for taxis,” said Michael.
