‘Don’t let South Africa run out of safe blood’ – SANBS

The fear of pain and needles keep many people away from blood banks. This, coupled with a ‘someone else will donate, my blood won’t make a difference’ mentality has led to a severe blood stock shortage at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). What is often forgotten is that small prick and a few seconds of your time can literally save lives.

SANBS has regretfully admitted that the shortage has reached the extent that there may not be sufficient blood available for patients in need. With the current demand, SANBS needs to collect 3 500 units of blood per day in order to have sufficient supply. They are therefore appealing to potential and existing blood donors who are due to donate, to visit a SANBS fixed or mobile blood donation site. “A blood donation gives patients a second chance with their loved ones; another Christmas to remember, another summer holiday at the beach, another birthday celebration,” justified the blood service.

To qualify to be a blood donor you must meet the following criteria:
• Weigh 50kg or more
• Be in good health
• Lead a healthy lifestyle
• Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
• Commit to donating regularly

SANBS is also appealing to the public to make venues available for blood drives. Suitable venues include spaces that are easily accessible and open to the public.
