Trial of former G4S guards to finally begin

The trial of the three former G4S guards who were arrested following a Florida CIT heist and the murder of Shane Williams will start next month.

After nearly six months and four court appearances, the trial of three former G4S guards is finally set to begin.

All three men were arrested on 30 October 2020 only hours after the cash-in-transit van they were driving was attacked. An undisclosed amount of money was taken by the 12 robbers who bombed the van, but the arrest of the former guards came after R3,2 million was recovered from under the seats of the armoured vehicle and in the dustbins of a nearby premises.

While the other 12 suspects were fleeing, they opened fire on a First Help tow truck being driven by Shane Williams who was attempting to respond to a call-out on Ontdekkers Road. Sadly, this was the last call Shane would ever attempt to respond to.

Following their arrest, G4S claimed to be conducting internal procedures with regard to the men’s jobs, but all three of them have since resigned from their posts. The co-accused appeared in court again on Tuesday, 13 April where it was announced that all investigations had been concluded. The men will need to return to the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 10 May when the trial will officially begin.

Since the CIT heist and murder of Shane Williams, the three guards have been the only ones arrested, and despite starting their case with five charges against them (including murder and armed robbery), the only charge the accused are facing now is theft. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has been contacted several times in an attempt to get more information on the changes, but there has been no response.
