One seriously injured in midday head-on collision

Paramedics provided life support interventions while an attempt was made to arrange for the patient to be airlifted.

The perilousness of busy intersections strike fear into the hearts of many motorists, despite how carefully you may be driving, one wrong move could lead to serious problems.

This was certainly the case on Ontdekkers Road shortly after 12.30 midday today, 15 April, when a head-on collision left a woman fighting for her life. The adult female was waiting in her Suzuki at the intersection outside of Princess Crossing Shopping Centre, hoping to turn right into the centre when the driver of a white Mercedes Vito Bus that was travelling in the direction of Krugersdorp collided with her vehicle head-on.

It is still unclear as to whether the Suzuki driver misjudged the distance of the Mercedes when she attempted to turn, but according to Shawn Herbst, Spokesperson for Netcare 911, the Mercedes driver had swerved to avoid another vehicle when the two vehicles collided. The impact was so severe that the woman was flung from her vehicle and when paramedics arrived she was found to be in critical condition.

Paramedics provided life support interventions while an attempt was made to arrange for the patient to be airlifted. Unfortunately, the woman’s medical aid company denied the helicopter, so she needed to be rushed to Milpark Hospital in an ambulance.

ER24, Netcare 911, Emer-G-Med, First Help and the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch were among the of the responders. Francois Groenewald, the responder from RNW, confirmed that the driver of the Mercedes and his passenger were both thankfully uninjured.

There has been no word on how the injured woman is doing as yet. This is a developing story and as soon as more information becomes available, an update will be published.
