Socialising for a greater purpose

Nkosi, a Wits University alumnus and a passionate fundi, started a digital social club in his community to interact with skilled job-seekers in his bid to secure employment for all through his networks.

Graduating from an institution of higher learning can bring hope to an individual, especially one with plans to change the financial situation at home once having obtained that dream job.

However, such life-changing dreams are quickly shattered due to the ever-increasing unemployment rate in our country – currently sitting on 32,5 per cent, with an estimated 7,2 million people without jobs.

Someone who understands the burden of job scarcity is Zandspruit born and bred community activist, Nhlanhla George Nkosi, who has started another empowerment project to bridge the gap of unemployment among graduates and skilled youth.

Nkosi, a Wits University alumnus and a passionate fundi, started a digital social club in his community to interact with skilled job-seekers in his bid to secure employment for all through his networks.

“We are working with Zandspruit residents with diplomas, degrees, postgraduate and masters certificates on our platform. The purpose of this is to meet in a social set-up, share ideas, mentor and ultimately help each other with business prospects and job opportunities,” he explained.

Nkosi added that they have created a WhatsApp group for the graduates which has about 32 members currently. “We are still trying to get more graduates to join this group, even from outside Zandspruit as the crisis of unemployment goes beyond the borders of our ward,” he said.

To prove that this dedicated graduate is no stranger to driving educational initiatives, last year during the height of Covid-19, Nkosi organised a group of friends to conduct extra lessons to prepare the matric class of 2020 for their final exams.

This selfless act already began in 2016 while studying towards his BA degree in Management and Political Science. Nkosi would sneak time off his busy studying schedule and return to his roots to conduct motivational and mentorship talks to Zandspruit matrics, and also went as far as tutoring the learners, many of whom passing with flying colours.
