Roodepoort police raid Witpoortjie liquor store

According to Captain Yorke if members of the public report illegal activities, the police can follow up on the information as they have done today.

On Tuesday, 30 March the Roodepoort Police received information through their crime intelligence division that one of the liquor stores in the Witpoortjie area was selling illegal goods.

Police, accompanied by representatives of the various brand holders, discovered that the various companies that were represented had information as well.

“The shop has been raided and the Roodepoort Police are currently confiscating the illegal liquor.

“We would like to issue a stern warning that we would not stop; so please, if you are doing something illegal, stop, or if you know of someone doing something illegal, don’t hesitate to call Crime Stop on 08600 10 111 and report it,” said Captain Juanita Yorke of Roodepoort Police Corporate Communications.

She added that if members of the public report illegal activities, the police can follow up on the information as they have done today.

The Record also approached the liquor store management for comment and they indicated that they were not aware of any illegal goods in their possession, and that they were still confused and shocked by the turn of events.

The immediate effects of illicit trade include major social ills such as crime and environmental degradation. Over the longer term, the impact runs much deeper, undermining the rule of law, fuelling corruption, and reducing government revenue and competitiveness.

Stakeholders in the alcohol industry are particularly concerned about the impact of illicit alcohol on consumers’ health and on the economic sustainability of legitimate, registered companies and its supply chain.
