New Cosmo City Police Station to operate fully

This community service establishment has been opened with the intent to alleviate the burden on Honeydew Police Station, which had been overstretched due to the development of the area.

The once satellite police station with limited services and resources has now been upgraded into a fully fledged police station. Starting from next month it will serve the residents of Cosmo City and its surrounds.

This station is expected to open officially on 1 April – unceremoniously for now, according to Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan.

This new station has been on the cards since 2019 after the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, made a stop at Honeydew Police Station to table a rescue plan for the embattled station, which was among the most strained and underperforming stations in the province.

During his visit, he promised a police station for Cosmo City which was expected to open the same year, but logistical snags dragged the opening for at least a year and a half.

For now, Cosmo City is expected to share resources and manpower with Honeydew, among some of the interim logistics.

Muthan also disclosed that the new station will focus on curbing crime in Cosmo, Itsotseng (Eskom) and Zandspruit. “The borders are still being drawn up, but the three areas will be of focus for the new station. We also expect more structures to arrive pretty soon to set up more working space for the personnel,” he explained.
