Former hostel residents rejoice in their new apartments

Ten years of delays and postponements finally come to an end for some

Acceptable living conditions are about more than just functional conveniences, they are a reflection of self worth and human dignity.

For a full decade, applicants approved to receive social housing from the Department of Human Settlements have been living in the deteriorating shell of the old Rand Leases hostel. Cold concrete floors, no running water, portable toilets shared with roughly 200 other people, and the constant threat of crime is the lived daily experience of many men and women at the dilapidated site.

For 25 residents of the hostel, the dream of finally having an apartment they can call their own became a reality, 3 March. Department of Human Settlements officials, Kevin Simelani and Errol Ngoasheng accompanied City of Johannesburg project manager, Phumzile Skosana and Calgro M3 representatives Mina Monyeki and Martin Letsoloalo at the afternoon key handover.

“It has always been and will always be a pleasure to be part of providing much-needed housing for all South African citizens. Calgro M3 Developments is proud to be part this process and will continue to deliver. We are looking forward to allocating the remainder of the residents in the hostel,” said Calgro M3 CEO, Wikus Lategan. Government officials have yet to field questions on the old Rand Leases hostel, neither to congratulate themselves nor explain the remainder of the outstanding allocations.

Prince Nemakwelengwe, Edwin Ramali and Zama Nguse have been the loudest voices in the fight for the seemingly forgotten hostel community. Even though their 10-year wait has come to a joyous end, they are not forgetting those who still occupy the old mining accommodation. “You don’t just leave and not go back. Those are our friends and we must keep putting pressure on officials to get them housing,” Prince said.

A new roof over their heads has injected a fresh outlook and despite the long wait, they are all appreciative of those who made it possible. “We are so very happy. Thank you to everyone, this is a dream come true,” said Edwin. Finding employment is next on the list and with a new home, they now have a solid foundation to build a prosperous life.
