A love that was meant to be

Despite knowing each other since birth, Graham and Anastasia Edwards never imagined that they would end up together

In Plato’s book, The Symposium, there is a recollection of a beautiful Greek Myth describing soulmates. The myth says that humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces, but fearing their power, Zeus split the humans in two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.

Whether or not you believe in this story, it is undeniable that there are people in the world who define the phrase ‘soulmates,’ and two of these people are Anastasia and Graham Edwards. This couple met before they were even born. Their mothers were pregnant at the same time and became friends while doing their check-ups at a local clinic. Graham and Anastasia were born five days apart and spent their lives side by side, yet paying no attention to each other. They were in the same class throughout their schooling career, and yet they barely ever spoke.

After high school, they each went their separate ways, both getting married, moving to other provinces, having children with other people, never sparing a thought for each other until their divorces brought them back together. Not long after their marriages ended, Anastasia and Graham both happened to be at the same party. Recognising her, Graham walked across the dance floor and asked his future wife to dance with him. She didn’t recognise him at first but after he re-introduced himself they began talking, discovering how much they had in common, right down to both having daughters who were born in August and named Roxanne.

They were married less than three years later and celebrated 32 laughter-filled years of marriage on 24 February. Being of Catholic faith, they thought their divorces prevented them from getting married in a church again, so their wedding was held in the courthouse but few years later, their priest, who had become like family, said they still needed to be married in the eyes of the Lord. So in 2006 he officiated a second wedding ceremony in Graham and Anastasia’s garden.

Every day they fall deeper in love with each other, and they now happily live in Bergbron with their four daughters and their puppies. Now 57 years old, they have been through a lot of ups and downs, but they remain everlastingly grateful they found their way back to each other. “When I am with him, I never feel alone. He is my soulmate,” said Anastasia.
