Honeydew CPF looking for more volunteers

“We are trying to grow the team so that we can put the volunteers out for more hours in the week, and then start making it more sector-specific.”

Community safety is not only about reducing and preventing injury and crime, it is about building strong, cohesive, vibrant and participatory communities.

Volunteer patroller programmes are about helping communities to be and feel safe, as it is important that you feel safe where you live, work or spend your leisure time.

The Honeydew CPF has a volunteer patroller programme under its auspices and they are looking for more members to join them.

It was started by Jon Rosenburg, the current Honeydew CPF chairperson, five years ago and has just over 50
members registered on the team. It is a voluntary service offered to residents within the Honeydew Precinct.

When residents join the patrollers they are teamed up with other members to patrol the area in pairs, and the requirement is to work at least one shift a month, generally on weekends.

“Let’s get together and increase the patroller programme – it doesn’t matter if you male or female, and any age from early 20s upwards is welcome.

“We are the eyes and ears to assist the police with their limited resources, and put extra vehicles on the roads at particular times. We also help them with roadblocks.

“We are trying to grow the team so that we can put the volunteers out for more hours in the week, and then start making it more sector-specific.

“The more people we get, the bigger the area that can get covered. Hope to see some of you on patrol with us soon,” said Jon.

Team members have to reside within the Honeydew precinct, they have to be South African citizens, and police clearance is also arranged for them before they can operate on the team.

Members of the public who would like to join or see what the volunteer patroller programme is about can speak to Jon Rosenberg on 082 450 2305 and ask for a ride-along shift.
