TSWR celebrates 35 years of educational excellence

Since phase 1 of the building process, a further eight building phases have been completed and the school has twice bought adjoining property to cater for its increased enrolment.

The King’s School West Rand (TSWR) is celebrating 35 years of educational excellence by taking us down memory lane and unpacking the inception of the institution.

In the early 1980s, a group of concerned parents came together to offer children of all races the opportunity to receive Christian education. Under the authority of the New Covenant Church, The King’s School West Rand (TSWR) opened its doors to 18 children in 1986.

Mr Ashton Sparrow was the principal in those early years. During this time Independent Christian School leaders were often threatened by the state and some were even jailed for short periods. Today Independent Christian Schools have a Constitutional right and protection.

Over the years, as the school grew, changing principals and renting properties to operate around the West Rand, the school finally found its permanent residence at its current premises in Poortview after receiving R500 000 to purchase the land.

After settling on the new premises, the school grew from 81 learners to over 500 in 2005. The same year Mr Ken Langley, the current principal took over – increasing the number of learners to almost 1 000.

Since phase 1 of the building process, a further eight building phases have been completed and the school has twice bought adjoining property to cater for its increased enrolment.

The success of this campus gave birth to three other campuses, namely the King’s School Discovery, the King’s School Muldersdrift and the King’s School Vineyard.

Reflecting on this astounding success, Langely said, “We remain determined to be a lighthouse school in this area to equip leaders of our nation”.
