Banish your cabin fever with Melville Koppies’ new hiking trail

To encourage more people to get out of their homes and take in some fresh air and beautiful sights while getting exercise, Melville Koppies has launched a new 5km hiking trail.

It’s been almost a year since the first lockdown began, and even though restrictions are slowly being eased and residents are gradually being allowed to do more things, cabin fever is still an ever-present aggravation.

To encourage more people to get out of their homes and take in some fresh air and beautiful sights while getting exercise, Melville Koppies has launched a new 5km hiking trail. The new trail guides you along the existing paths, up rocky gullies, down gentle slopes, through cool forested areas and into open grasslands. There are several view sights where you can stop to catch your breath while keeping an eye out for a few interesting sights such as the Magaliesberg mountains, the Kelvin Power Station Towers, Northcliff Water Tower, and the tallest building in Africa: the Leonardo building in Sandton.

While the hike can be a challenge if you are still building your fitness level, you do not need to torture yourself to complete it because there are numerous places where you can escape from the trail and take a shorter route back. You can always go back to the Koppies the next week to see if you can get further.

You can choose to explore quietly at your own pace, or take a guided tour in your group at no extra cost. This is a trail that everyone should try at least once. A few hikers who have already tried out the trail had only good things to say, despite being soaked by the rain that has lingered over the past few weeks. “It’s the most beautiful hike in Joburg,” said one hiker. “Even if it was pouring with rain, I was still going to come. I’m so tired of being inside,” said another.

Melville Koppies is open every Sunday from 8am to 11.30am, except on 2 May (the trails will be open on 1 May instead). The entrance fee for adults is R80 and R40 for children. All of the income is used for maintenance and security of the Koppies. There is no need to pre-book and there is secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park on Judith Road, Emmarentia. Mid-week tours can also be arranged.
