Gun crime rife despite firearm amnesty

“Do not become a hero. If criminals are inside your house or business, or are hijacking you, leave them to take whatever they want before they harm you or your family.”

Long queues and lengthy paperwork characterised the recent closing of the firearm amnesty period.

Law-abiding South Africans waited for hours to meet the deadline but criminal elements by their nature have no regard for the rules. Florida Police, through their spokesperson Sergeant Mpho More, are asking the community for help in ridding the streets of illegal firearms.

“Firearms are still rife in our country, so we are saying to our communities to be vigilant at all times” stated Sergeant More. “More than 15 cases were reported in January were firearms were use; cases like house robberies, business robberies and hijackings. Please report any suspicious behaviour in the area,” she continued.

Sergeant More issued tips on how best to join the fight against illegal firearms:
– We stay with criminals in our houses. Please report family members who have illegal firearms at home. You can report anonymously on 10111, or Florida SAPS number 011 831 7000 or 071 675 7145.
– Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers, like 112 which is for free when using any cellphone.
– Do not become a hero. If criminals are inside your house or business, or are hijacking you, leave them to take whatever they want before they harm you or your family.
