Christmas cheer for all at Wilro Lions market

A festive pop-up market marked with the lighting up of their Christmas tree

Dark skies and a stiff wind could not keep Wilro Park Lions Club from spreading their festive season goodwill. To give the community one last hooray for 2020, the Lions family hosted an afternoon market, Saturday 12 December.

Starting at 3pm, attendees were spoiled for choice as they had over 40 stalls to take their pick from. The event would climax with the switching on of the Christmas tree lights.

With fundraising hampered by the events of 2020, the club needed to get creative. “The idea popped up while we were discussing ways to sell our Lions Christmas Cakes. Each year from the proceeds of the cakes we sponsor R10 000 towards a Guide Dog for the Blind and this year we would like to sponsor a Service Dog for a child with autism, as well as support our other very worthwhile projects,” said Sandy van Heerden.

In keeping with the Lions’ love for their community, the vendors were not charged anything in the hope that they could maximise their profits. Sandy explained the sentiment behind the Christmas tree, saying, “The Christmas Tree is in memory of our past President Molly Francis who was a dedicated Lion for many years, lighting up many lives. Molly sadly passed away on Christmas Day in 2010 and so our tree is dedicated to her.”

Wilro Park Lions Park wished everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year, with Sandy adding, “We sincerely thank everyone who supported our pop-up market, helping us to help others. We hope that you will all join us again for the next one!”
