Police and the community’s security companies launch crime safety initiative

“Roodepoort Police wishs everyone in their community a wonderful and safe festive season.”

The men and women who help us sleep safely at night may have tough exteriors and hardened attitudes, but they act with nothing but warmth for the community.

Roodepoort Police and the private security sector met at Westgate Shopping Centre for the launch of their festive season crime initiative on Monday, 7 December. Those gathered congratulated themselves on getting through a tough year, while reaffirming their commitment to being the primary barrier between criminal elements and the vulnerable members of the community.

Initiated by Social Crime Prevention and Visible Policing Unit, the day was aimed at sending a message throughout the entire policing district. “It is about showing the community that police are not working alone. This is also part of our 16 days of activism against gender-based violence,” said Sergeant Shumikazi Mbuli of Social Crime Prevention.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Captain Juanita Yorke, expressed her gratitude to the members of the private security force, saying, “There is no ‘I’ in team. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each of you for getting out and making a difference.” Acting station commander, Colonel Lukas Nkosi, echoed her sentiments, saying “This is our Roodepoort, we must protect this community”.

Once treated to the charming sounds of the police’s brass band, who travelled all the way from Jeppestown, the uniformed officers and household names that make up the area’s private security contingent drove in convoy to each of the four policing sectors. Armed with educational pamphlets, Durban Deep was first on the list before moving onto Matholesville, Witpoortjie and finally Helderkruin.

Captain Yorke concluded with a heartfelt message saying, “Roodepoort Police would like to thank all role players for making a difference and standing together against crime in the policing precinct. Roodepoort Police wish everyone in their community a wonderful and safe festive season.”
