Roodepoort Police issue safety tips for business owners

Reports of business robberies from across the West Rand have been streaming in over of the past few weeks. Sadly, it seems that where there are profits, there are those waiting to pounce.

A video, provided by Apcan Security, shows a snippet of a robbery at a business premises along the Princess strip of Ontdekkers Road. The robbery took place on Monday 30 November and fortunately no staff or patrons were hurt in the incident. Police have confirmed that there have been several armed business robberies in the area in the last week, and are urging shoppers to exercise extreme caution in the lead-up to Christmas.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Captain Juanita Yorke, had safety tips for business owners, which include:
– Do not keep too much money at the business premises
– Be on the lookout for suspicious customers
– Do not keep the shop open until late
– Avoid being alone, especially at night
– Do not open for anyone after the business has closed

Apcan relayed their tips for shoppers, mainly:
– Do not try and be hero. Cooperate with the robber. Do not resist, and don’t do anything that would put store employees or customers at risk
– Avoid surprises as robbers are generally nervous, so anything quick, or surprising movements could put you and others in harm’s way
– Observe without making it obvious. Take note of as many of the details as possible
– Call the police immediately after the incident and preserve the evidence
