Seven-year-old culinary sensation impresses at cooking competition

He made two dishes: Kiwi chutney, ostrich and roast veg tower; and a banana bread with vanilla ice cream, chunky strawberry syrup and fresh fruit.

On 7 November, the Johannesburg Taste Bud Battle semi-finals took place at Cresta Shopping Centre, where young contestants who entered the popular South African kids cooking and baking competition, gathered to present their dishes.

The Trinityhouse Little Falls Grade 1 learner, Tyron Kleynhans competed in the Tastebud Battle semi-finals and impressed with his unique culinary creations.

He made two dishes: Kiwi chutney, ostrich and roast veg tower; and a banana bread with vanilla ice cream, chunky strawberry syrup and fresh fruit.

This is the second year that Tyron has entered the competition – in 2019 he made it through to the finals, but narrowly lost out on the winning spot.

This year, it is clear that seven-year-old from Little Falls is back with a vengeance and intends to take it all the way.

“Tyron is an incredible little boy, he really made an impression on us last year with his passion for cooking, but also with his very outgoing personality and his extremely advanced sense of humour. We were so happy to see him back again this year, and we knew he meant business when he entered both a savoury and a sweet dish. Both scored highly with the judges,” said competition director, Donna Verrydt.

Tyron will now face finalists from all around the country in the Final Cook-off, which will be a Mystery Box Challenge on Saturday 14 November at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Rosebank.
