Damage to Nursery substation causing lengthy outage in Florida and Discovery

Expiry of maintenace contracts exacerbating restoration

The Saturday night wall of water and wind left a vast trail of destruction on 31 October. The forces of nature and lack of foresight has again left residents powerless.

As of Sunday morning, 1 November, most of Florida and Discovery was still without power with no indication of any light at the end of the tunnel. “City Power are still busy assessing the damage and will provide feedback accordingly,” said City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.

Prolonging the outage is the severe damage caused to the Nursery substation. The previous evening’s storm ripped off metal sheeting and dumped it onto the electrical infrastructure giving City Power technicians a complicated job ahead.

No estimated time of restoration has been given but worrying information has been revealed surrounding the City’s maintenance contracts. Unfortunately, the maintenance labour contracts came to an end on 31 October 2020. Thus, City Power will only be operated with limited internal resources from today,” confirmed Gauteng DA caucus leader, councillor Leah Knott.

Technicians have still been deployed but there are several problem areas across Johannesburg so residents are urged to stretch their already strained patience.

Details on the maintenance contract story to follow.
