WATCH: CIT robbery ends in tragedy

First Help confirmed the tragic passing of one of their most dedicated employees, saying that he was the most helpful and kind man anyone could meet.

Shortly before 9am this morning, Florida residents, business owners and commuters were left in shock after a cash-in-transit heist was carried out on a G4S van at the intersection of Ontdekkers and Gordon Roads.

Barricades were set up around the massive crime scene, forcing motorists to find alternative routes for their own safety as the intersection and adjoining roads were closed off.

A large contingency of various law-enforcement agencies including forensics, TRT, provincial and local police descended on the road to comb the bullet-scattered scene. Bullet shells and markings were found across the crime scene after the shootout that took place during the ordeal.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find the G4S armoured vehicle with its rear blown up. After assessing the scene, paramedics found that one of the security officers had sustained minor, soft-issue injuries and was transferred to a nearby hospital after they had treated him.

Minutes later, emergency services and the police were notified of shots that had been fired on 14th Avenue. Paramedics arrived to find a man lying in a First Help tow truck. Assessments showed that the driver had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest and was declared dead on scene. “Nothing could be done for him,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

Staff and owners from surrounding businesses that spoke to the Record described the heist as an action scene from a Hollywood movie. One said he had to stop filming and hide after shots and an explosion went off. Another said as soon as he heard the shots, he closed his business premises and hid inside in fear of his life.

Details surrounding the14th Avenue shooting are not yet known, but that is reportedly the regular spot where the deceased used to park while waiting to be called to a scene. Local authorities are investigating the shooting.

Florida Police officers that were on scene were unable to comment on the issue, however, the National Police spokesperson has been contacted for comment, as has G4S. An update will be done once the official comment has been received.
