Roodepark School hosts annual market until 6 November

All items on sale are handmade by the various centres within in the school, ranging from welded steel benches to delicious confectionary and handmade wooden toys.

Using one’s own creativity and bare hands to make something is a special feeling. Profiting off that creation and seeing someone else benefit from your work simply amplifies the sense of accomplishment.

Giving the students of Roodepark School a rewarding purpose while also raising money for the school is at the core of their annual market, held this year from 19 to 23 October. “Roodepark School believes in empowering learners to overcome learning barriers by equipping them with practical life skills to become self-sufficient citizens who can contribute to the development of our country,” said Deputy Principal, Alta Kotze. With the school year being one of the most difficult and disrupted in living memory, the annual market has helped bring some normality to proceedings.

Shifting term schedules means the market will be interrupted for a week when the schools go on holiday. The all-day shopping fun will then be resumed on 2 November, running all week from 8am to 7pm until 6 November. A special section known as the ‘White Elephant’ is dedicated to donated items that are sold for a fraction of their store value, although everything at the market is exceptionally favourably priced.
