Bakers can be superheroes too

Superhero Day celebrates their first patient's inspirational story of survival, hope, and love.

While Halloween may be a bit of a controversial holiday, there are ways you can join in on the dress-up fun without compromising your beliefs.

31 October is most commonly known as Halloween, but it is also celebrated annually as Superhero Day. For the past three years, this day has been hosted as a fundraising initiative by Cupcakes of HOPE, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that focuses on raising awareness of childhood cancer, and supporting those affected by it.

Superhero Day celebrates their first patient’s inspirational story of survival, hope, and love. Kegan Holl was born on 31 October 2008 with Down Syndrome and was diagnosed with cancer at only 18 months old. In 2009, he became Cupcakes of HOPE’s first patient after doctors advised that he would not make it past his second birthday, but the living miracle is now 12 years old and a symbol of hope for so many people.

Superhero Day is celebrated every year on Kegan’s birthday, and everyone is invited to join in on the fun. As a part of their Bake a Difference Campaign, Cupcakes of HOPE is inviting anyone who is willing to bake superhero-themed cupcakes to sell, and raise funds and awareness for the little heroes they help. Everyone is also encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero on 31 October to add a little bit of fun to the day.

Register to be a Cupcake Angel, or find out more about the initiative on the organisation’s website (www.cupcakesofhope.org) or by contacting Lori by calling 078 139 4930 or emailing lori@cupcakesofhope.org.

Participants are also invited to send photos of their outfits and superhero cupcakes to amys@caxton.co.za for a chance to be featured in the Roodepoort Record or Roodepoort Northsider’s print editions. Simply send through your photos with your names and which part of Roodepoort you stay in for your chance to be featured.

If you cannot bake cupcakes to be a part of the fundraiser, please support the cause by either buying a cupcake from one of the Cupcake Angels, or buying a virtual cupcake from the Cupcakes of HOPE website. If you purchase one of the virtual cupcakes, you can stand a chance to win a hamper or gift voucher from a participating shopping centre in your area. You can also choose to send a beautiful e-card to one of your loved ones, letting them know that you purchased the cupcake in their honour.
