Lil Choices caring for the circle of life

Supporters from as far away as Port Elizabeth and Australia were present to enjoy the organisation's hospitality.

Care and love are vital from birth all the way to one’s later years. Not only focused on preserving life, Lil Choices showed they have a heart for the aged too as they hosted their fifth annual seniors appreciation day, 4 October.

The logistical difficulties of planning an event during 2020 meant that the past venue of Arthur Matthews Primary School’s hall had to be changed to Lil Choice’s headquarters. Run by Director Rae Bagus, Lil Choices offers sanctuary to abused women and provides an alternative to abortion by offering refuge for women who wish to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.

The attendees began to gather shortly after midday and once the pleasantries were exchanged, a delicious curry dish was served to the retirees. Tea and an assortment of expertly baked cakes were next on the menu with an ice cream putting the cherry on top of a hearty feast. Proving that the dance floor does not discriminate against age, the seniors then turned back the clock to bust a move.

Providing the sweet melodies were Omar ‘Tom Jones’ Hartley and Mohamed ‘Elvis’ Sallie. One could sit back, close one’s eyes and have Omar instantly make you feel you were in the presence of the Welsh crooner. Similarly, Mohamed brought Las Vegas to Dan Pienaar Ave with his glittering jumpsuit and gyrating hips reminiscent of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Supporters from as far away as Port Elizabeth and Australia were present to enjoy the organisation’s hospitality. Sydney resident, Zyaida Wilson, is Lil Choice’s newest ambassador and will hope to promote the cause when she returns. “I love the way Rae handles the programme. Everything is always so well organised,” said Zyaida.

The catering was proudly sponsored by Wasim Cajee of Chi Chi’s Fine Food, with the empty plates evidence of an appreciative crowd. Fundraising has been difficult in 2020 but Rae and Lil Choices have scraped together enough to upgrade the facility to offer modern accommodation to the women in need. Community support is the life blood of this important organisation and should one wish to get involved or donate, please call Rae Bagus on 082 782 6018.
