Local schools celebrate World Teachers’ Day by leading in crisis

The pandemic has significantly contributed to the challenges faced by the already over-extended education systems throughout the world.

Educators around the world celebrated the annual World Teachers’ Day on 5 October while taking stock of achievements and drawing attention to the voices of teachers who are at the heart of efforts not to leave any child behind.

Celebrations under this year’s theme, ‘Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future’ were mostly online due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has significantly contributed to the challenges faced by the already over-extended education systems throughout the world.

Schools and educational institutes came to a halt earlier this year to slow the spread of the virus. This saw teachers roll up their sleeves and work extra hard amid the lockdown to ensure that their learners would not suffer or were left behind.

Dedication was proven by the heart-warming stories of teachers going the extra mile during the difficult period.

It is no exaggeration to say that the world is at a crossroads and, now more than ever, communities need to work with educators to protect the right to education and guide it into the unfolding landscape brought about by the pandemic.

Even the World Teachers’ Day opening ceremony and UNESCO-Hamdan Prize Awards Ceremony on 5 October took place online, and so will the closing ceremony on 12 October, with a series of national, regional and global events throughout the week.

Locally, educational institutions also acknowledged their educators.
