Two Zimbabweans arrested in Roodepoort explosives bust

National Crime Intelligence and Gauteng Organised Crime detectives secured the arrest on the evening of Monday, 05 October 2020.

The criminal network has nodes that are interconnected locally, across provincial borders and nationally. One link of that supply chain has been disrupted as police have arrested two men in possession of explosives and related items.

National Crime Intelligence and Gauteng Organised Crime detectives secured the arrest on the evening of Monday, 05 October 2020. The two Zimbabwean nationals were traced to the park adjacent to the Roodepoort Sports Club on Hinda Street and were found with the items strongly linked to illegal mining, ATM and cash-in-transit bombings.

“The team approached the suspects and upon searching their vehicle found 39 explosive gels with igniting cables. Police also seized the suspects’ vehicle as an instrument used during the commission of a crime,” stated police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ court on 7 October on charges of possession of and dealing in explosives as well as for being in the country illegally,” concluded Brigadier Peters.
