Security officer tragically killed in the line of duty

Two Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) patrollers also responded to the scene in hopes of helping where they could.

The security services industry is fraught with danger; the men and women in uniform lay their lives on the line to protect the communities they serve, and sometimes this ends in tragedy.

This was sadly the case on Tuesday, 6 October at a Wilro Park shopping centre. An on-duty 24/7 Security officer was killed during a violent altercation while performing his duties. The officer had been deployed to the shopping centre with the request of escorting a vagrant off the premises when a struggle ensued at approximately 12.30pm. According to Security 24/7 statements the vagrant then attacked the security officer who fought back, but was severely injured during the altercation.

The brave and courageous officer Perfect Mbatha was stabbed in the neck with a sharp object, but was still able to detain the suspect until the police arrived to make the arrest. ER24 paramedics rushed the injured officer to Life Flora Clinic where, despite the best efforts of ER24 responders and the hospital Trauma staff, he tragically succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a loving mother, sister and two brothers.

General Manager of Guarding Operations at 24/7 Security, André du Plessis, spoke on behalf of the company, sharing his sentiments of regret and sadness. “We are saddened by this senseless incident that resulted in the loss of life. Our condolences go out to officer Mbatha’s family, friends, and colleagues. The increase in violent crime is a concern, and we urge all first responders to remain vigilant.”

Two Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) patrollers also responded to the scene in hopes of helping where they could. RNW shared their condolences as well. “RNW sends its deepest condolences to the family of the officer, his colleagues and friends, as well as all the staff at 24/7 Security Services.”

24/7 Security has said that the police are currently holding the suspect and they are cooperating with the investigation in any way they can.

Roodepoort Police have been approached for comment, but by the time of publication none has been received. This is a developing story and the Record will provide an update once comment has been received and court dates are announced.
