Spring Road bridge completed, remains closed

This bridge was closed in 2017 when its integrity could not be guaranteed.

WHBHO, the contractor assigned to construct the multi-million rand Spring Road bridge in Weltevreden Park has finally kept his end of the bargain.

On Friday, 2 October, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) officials together with the contractor conducted a practical completion oversight inspection ahead of the official handover.

This bridge was closed in 2017 when its integrity could not be guaranteed.

Ward 126 councillor David Brand commented about the completion. “It is wonderful that the bridge has been completed. If it wasn’t for Covid-19, the bridge could have been completed much sooner.

“Unlike the old bridge which was quite narrow, this one is much wider and provides a pedestrian walkway on both sides,” he explained, adding that the new bridge is much stronger as a pile driver was used to drive piles into the bedrock.

The most positive aspect, according to Brand was that the bridge would alleviate traffic congestion and also help security companies and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) in their fight against crime.

“We’ve had complaints in the past from the CPF saying that criminals are using the bridge as an escape route. Then it was difficult for vehicles to access,” he explained

Although complete, the bridge is expected to remain closed until the official handover.
