Lions Clubs helping with the gift of sight

As a non-profit organisation, costs are always an issue, so the Lions Clubs are asking anyone with old frames that are still in good condition but aren't being used to come forward and donate them to help another person.

Lions Clubs are non-profit organisations (NPOs) that are internationally renowned for the work they do in their communities.

Functioning only on donations and fundraising, these clubs have the goal of uniting communities and giving those with nothing a leg up. One of the initiatives run by the Lions Clubs in Roodepoort is the Eye Clinic.

Volunteers from the Lions Clubs of Roodepoort Host, Weltevreden Park, Helderkruin and Wilro Park give their time to help community members who cannot afford spectacles with eye tests and glasses. The nationwide lockdown meant that the eye clinic could not operate due to safety reasons and social distancing, but these four clubs have announced that the service can now be offered again.

The Lions Eye Clinic can be found on 8th Avenue in Roodepoort North and will be open every Saturday from 9am to 11am. Volunteers will be there to assist people with any tests and queries. First appointments do not need to be made for the clinic, you may just go in and one of the volunteers will explain the process to you in full. The eye clinic is open to members of the public who need glasses but do not have medical aid or the finances to cover the cost of spectacles and tests through an optician.

To ensure everyone’s safety, the Eye Clinic will be following the strict Level 2 gazette regulations regarding the use of masks, sanitizing hands and practicing social distancing. For more information regarding the clinic, please contact Rob McClarty on 083 452 7419. Rob can also be contacted if you would like to support the Lions’ Eye Clinic through cash donations or sponsoring spectacles.

They, unfortunately, cannot accept broken frames.
