Uniting millions towards one vision

Move One Million, a global campaign aimed at changing government policies and fighting for the rights of the people, has hit the ground running in South Africa.

Visible and vibrant on social media with almost 500 000 members on Facebook alone, the cause seems bigger than the ones the average South African knows.

The ambassador of this campaign, Jarette Petzer, also the founder #ImStaying Media, recently hosted a meet and greet on the West Rand to mobilise and conscientise people about this campaign, which seeks to end corruption, violence and racism.Petzer, who travelled from Cape Town to host the meet and greet, explained to the Northsider the notion behind this rapidly growing campaign.

“This movement is built on the same purpose and foundation as #ImStaying, which is a unifying call that aims to create social cohesion,” he said.

A favoured Petzer said the main objective of this movement is to stand against the wrongs that are taking place in the country, such as corruption, and in turn hold those in power accountable.

To achieve this ambition, Petzer indicated that they plan to use direct elections. This year the South African Constitution Court ruled in favour of independent or direct elections, a new rule that allows independent candidates to contest for power during an election. Petzer envisaged the following: “There are direct elections on the way that we need to focus on. So in the next 22 months, we want to work on this to ensure that it serves the needs of the people of South Africa. If we achieve our goal, then in the next five to 15 years we will start rebuilding our country to where we want it to be.”

When asked if he had ambitions of turning the movement into a political party, Petzer had none. “We have no ambitions to be political. We are an a-political party but we are open to working with anybody who’s willing to work in the best interests of South Africa,” he said, adding that they don’t want to associate themselves with any political party because that may affect their ability to grow and garner support from the public.

Regarding support, Petzer also reflected on the overwhelming reception thus far. “The support has been fantastic and I think it’s because of timing. South Africans have been frustrated and there’s nothing as frustrating as when you feel like there are no options available. So what we’ve done is to provide South Africans with an option to be part of a uniting movement,” he explained.
