West Rand DJ spins the discs of hope

DJ Mabheka was born in Alexandria, Eastern Cape and grew up in Motherwell near Port Elizabeth.

Luyanda Gqoba, who goes by the stage name DJ Mabheka has evolved to mastering the art and skill of combining different sets of musical elements and sound so beautifully.

DJ Mabheka was born in Alexandria, Eastern Cape and grew up in Motherwell near Port Elizabeth.

According to DJ Mabheka, he comes from a choral music background and grew up in the Old Apostolic Church. “The skill to combine 60 voices consisting of alto, soprano, tenor and bass sets really amazed me and I immediately fell in love with music,” said the crowd’s favourite DJ.

His love of music quickly matured into his fondness for RnB, and how people expressed their feelings and translated them to music. “I quickly switched to being a soulful house music fanatic,” he said.DJ Mabheka revealed to the Northsider that the national lockdown has affected a lot of people, and not being able to go out to clubs and take charge of the ones and twos pose a real challenge to artists because that is how they earn a living.

“Life is a journey, enjoy it; but just like any road, it has concealed driveways left and right. There are inclines and declines. Embrace all those challenges. When it declines that’s when you really enjoy life’s moments,” said the humble DJ.

Before moving to Gauteng from the Eastern Cape he was a resident DJ and sound supplier at Eyethu Sports Bar till 2015.

The ambitious nature surfaces when DJ Mabheka talks about where he comes from as he reflects on the disadvantages and zero developments in Alexandria.

“I am ambitious and a very humble person who knows the spirit of ubuntu. I get love when I go to Alexandria and I don’t want to leave them out. It gives hope if one of us makes it somehow and when I go back home they always submit songs. I don’t forget them in any way because I know there’s talent there,” he concluded.
