Homeowners against paying to have subs removed

City Power has been contacted for further comment on this matter.

“Why must we as property owners pay to correct a poor decision by City Power?”

These were the sentiments of a furious ratepayer in Strubens Valley who has been contesting the installation of two mini substations on either side of her driveway early this year without being consulted.

John and Annie Carreira of Witwatersrand Road in Strubens Valley claimed they have been fighting a losing battle to get City Power to relocate the two heavy and tall electric boxes which are eyesores and expose them to thieves and hijackers. These mini subs were installed in March to replace the one that had blown up a while before.

“We are petrified to reverse out of the driveway due to it now being the perfect spot for hijackers to hide. Thugs have already tried to use it to climb over the wall to get into my property. In addition, this has affected the value of my property. No one will purchase a house with mini substations on its doorstep,” Annie complained.

City Power’s response some time ago was that the homeowners had to apply for having the mini subs relocated, for which such homeowners may be expected to pay.

“City Power had ample opportunity to install it on the side of the house or at the park which is not even a half kilometre from my house, but chose not even to listen and went ahead,” she criticised.

City Power has been contacted for further comment on this matter. An update will be published as and when new information is made available.
