Do your part this Mandela Day

The 67 minutes for Mandela Day serve as a reminder of his years of service to the country; one minute for every year he served.

Every year on 18 July, people across the world celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy by using his birthday to perform a variety of charitable deeds for their community.

Since 2009, Mandela Day has seen people feed the hungry, clothe those with nothing, promote education and community spirit, and use 67 minutes of their time or a donation to help those who desperately need it.

The 67 minutes for Mandela Day serve as a reminder of his years of service to the country; one minute for every year he served. This day of charity is getting a lot closer, so if you have yet to find something that you can do for Mandela Day this year, then the Ogle Foundation may have a way you can help. This non-profit organisation (NPO) will spend Friday, 17 July (the day before Mandela Day) feeding some of the most vulnerable people in Roodepoort.

Patty Ogle, the foundation?s founder, and her team are setting up a feeding station at the park on the corner of Paul Kruger Road and 5th Avenue in Honeydew Ridge at 10am. The foundation will hand out food parcels, soup, bread, and clothes to the homeless and unemployed residents who just need a helping hand. The foundation is asking for volunteers to help distribute the food and clothes, as well as assist with social distancing among those who attend because they are expecting a maximum of 200 people on the day. If you cannot donate your time, Patty is asking people who can to please donate any food products or clothes.

This is an annual Mandela Day tradition that makes up part of the foundation?s charitable work throughout the year. All people who attend, either to volunteer or receive a parcel, will be sanitized and registered.

If you can help, this is what they need most:

  • Volunteers – to assist with observing social distancing and following regulations
  • Vegetables and fruits – Canned foods, Bread, Rice,  Flour,  Mielie pap,  Juice
  • Clothes

If you are able to donate one of the above items, or your time, please contact Patty Ogle on 076 313 2547. Patty can also be contacted for any further information regarding this initiative and others the foundation undertakes.
