Food Lover’s Market – Hillfox donates food for elephants

General Manager of Food Lover's Market - Hillfox, Tony Joao was approached by Tim Smith from Wildside Tours and Safaris to help out with food for the elephants.

Food Lover’s Market in Hillfox, Roodepoort made a generous donation to the elephants of Glen Afric Country Lodge in Broederstroom after their regular supply of fruit and vegetables had dried up because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

General Manager of Food Lover’s Market – Hillfox, Tony Joao was approached by Tim Smith from Wildside Tours and Safaris to help out with food for the elephants. Tony jumped at the opportunity and now food is collected from the shop every Tuesday and Friday.

Tim regularly takes people out on tours to enjoy an elephant experience, and one of the destinations he has worked with closely over the years is Glen Afric within the Cradle of Humankind, where visitors can celebrate the wild by enjoying a bush game drive, and walk with the elephants.

“I am grateful to Tony and Food Lover’s Market – Hillfox for their generosity and helping out to feed the elephants at such a difficult time in our country,” said Tim.

He has developed a special bond with the elephants over the years, and recalls that nearly 28 years ago an elephant named Three was rescued from a culling operation. She had a calf named Hannah.

When Hannah was about three weeks old, another four-weeks-old calf was found stranded on an island in the Kruger National Park.

They brought the rescued calf to Three who adopted him and raised the two calves. Hannah and Marty are now 11 years old and they roam freely on the farm.
