Two lives lost in devastating Weltevreden Park fire

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed that two people sadly lost their lives in the fire.

On Wednesday, 17 June security personnel and Honeydew CPF were the first to respond to a devastating fire that engulfed a home on Rooisering Street, Weltevreden Park.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed that two people sadly lost their lives in the fire.

The property was totally destroyed by the raging flames and the matter is currently under police investigation.

“It is extremely insensitive to post pictures and videos at a scene, particularly when the family haven’t yet been notified of the tragedy. The first posts were circulating minutes after the fire started, and I wish people would place themselves in the shoes of the family that have suffered the loss, before finding the need to be the first to post. It is shocking to say the least, and I’m so waiting for the day when someone is prosecuted for posting on WhatsApp or Facebook. May the deceased rest in peace,” said the vice chairperson of the Honeydew CPF, Jon Rosenberg.

There has been much speculation as to the cause of the fire, and the authorities are expected to give comment after their investigation has been finalised.

“Thank you to all that responded to assist in the tragedy, at one point putting your own lives on the line,” said Rosenberg.

The incident followed another fire on Pierre Road, Honeydew on 16 June when the main house was gutted. Fortunately all family members were evacuated safely from their home.

The damage to the house was catastrophic and everything was destroyed.

ER24 treated one of the family members on scene for smoke inhalation.
