Update on Florida outage: Some areas will only be restored by Friday

The damaged 33kv feeder cables are oil-filled cables, as such, they require a long process to complete repairing them

Earlier today, 3 June, large parts of Florida experienced an unplanned power outage.

Technicians were dispatched, where it was discovered that the outage happened when a Rand Water contractor damaged two of our main 33kv feeder cables during excavations.

According to a statement released by the power entity, most of the affected areas’ electricity has been restored, including:

  • Florida
  • Florida Lake
  • Hamberg
  • Creswell Park
  • Maraisburg
  • Florida North

Unfortunately, some of the areas will be without power until the repairs have been completed, including:

  • Lea Glen
  • Stormill
  • Fleurhof
  • Rand Water Pump Station

Sydney Mphahlele, spokesperson for City Power, explained, “City Power technicians are now busy with the arrangements to do repairs on the damaged 33kv feeder cables.

These damaged 33kv feeder cables are oil-filled cables, as such, they require a long process to complete repairing them. It is expected that the repairs will be completed by Friday evening, 5 June should the process run smoothly. We will keep customers updated.”

He concluded by apologising for any inconvenience caused.
