WATCH: West Rand officially declared a Covid-19 hot spot

There are still 84 unallocated cases in the West Rand District

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has officially declared the West Rand District a Covid-19 hot spot.

This is a result of the significant increase in Covid-19 cases at the Anglo Gold Ashanti Mponeng Mine in Merafong recently.

Yesterday, Wednesday, 27 May, Makhura said among the many mines on the West Rand, the Mponeng Mine has reported the largest number of positive Covid-19 cases so far.

Fortunately, very few cases have been reported at the other mines in the area.

He said the Province had a meeting with officials from all the mining houses and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to asses what measures had been put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

He added that screening was not enough and urged the mines to make testing a high priority.

“We will direct all the necessary provincial and national support to help ensure that we contain the spread of the virus, particularly at the mines.”
