COJ to gradually reintroduce services

City Power will gradually reintroduce certain services such as meter reading, changing out faulty meters, normalising bridged meters, installing smart meters, and meter audits

Following new regulations published by the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, City Power would like to notify customers that it will gradually reintroduce services that may require a home visit.

The gazetted amendment (No. 43258 of 29 April 2020) seeks to “enable municipalities to perform various legislated functions, including the adoption of integrated development plans (IDPs) and operations relating to municipal services and revenue collection during the lockdown, in adherence to all Covid-19 public health and containment prescripts, especially those relating to gatherings, physical distancing, health and safety”.

This allows for municipal entities to operate revenue-generating services, including:(iii) municipal trading services, such as … electricity, property rates (v) meter reading.

Isaac Mangena, the spokesperson for City Power said in a statement, “As such, City Power will gradually reintroduce certain services such as meter reading, changing out faulty meters, normalising bridged meters, installing smart meters, and meter audits (to eliminate wrongful billing and estimates).

Stand-by-stand audits will also go ahead.”He reminded customers that, despite these changes, they are still not allowing walk-in customer services at any City Power location.

Mangena added, “We would like to urge residents to allow our meter reading teams access to the meters so that we can provide customers with accurate billing. The safety of our customers and that of our employees is of paramount importance, and we will ensure that our teams adhere to the defined guidelines, including social distancing, when interacting with customers and colleagues.

Our employees are also equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to enable them to safely do their job. The teams have been instructed to always wear their masks, and apply sanitizer before and after touching equipment in customers’ homes.

“He concluded by thanking the community and residents for their cooperation and understanding.
