Man busted for selling non-essential goods and trying to bribe police

A concerned resident informed them of the spaza shop owner in the Joshua Doore informal settlement who was selling cigarettes

Kagiso Police’s Crime Prevention team arrested a 28-year-old man for non-compliance and bribery in Kagiso recently.

The person was selling non-essential goods and also tried to bribe the police after being caught.

When they received the tip-off, the police were busy with their crime-prevention duties and also monitored compliance with the regulations pertaining to Level 4 lockdown.

A concerned resident informed them of the spaza shop owner in the Joshua Doore informal settlement who was selling cigarettes.

The police went to the shop where they searched for illegal goods. They found seven packets of cigarettes that were hidden in the back, and when the owner realised he was caught out, he tried to bribe the officers with money.

According to a statement sent by Kagiso Police, the owner begged the officers to just confiscate the cigarettes and leave him behind.

The Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna commended the officers.

“I applaud my members’ level of discipline. Anyone who underestimates and undermines our authority, while disregarding the laws of the country, will face the might of the law,” Maduna said.
