Finding a gap in the lockdown market

The designer, who can’t sell leather bags at this stage, has turned to designing and making face masks to help his community.

The national lockdown has deprived a lot of citizens from going to work and earning a salary due to companies complying with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 and shutting down indefinitely.

With the hefty price of food and equipment to protect people against Covid-19, most citizens have fallen on hard times.

However, a local designer, Bongani Bomax Nyathi, whose job is to design leather bags, has found an opportunity to make money during the lockdown.

The designer, who can’t sell leather bags at this stage, has turned to designing and making face masks to help his community.

Wearing disposable face masks is among the most-used preventative measures against the spread of the virus; however, they do not come cheap.

This is why Bomax came up with the idea of making his own washable masks, and selling them cheap to his surrounding community.

He explained how he found a gap in the market. “I realised that people are finding it hard to buy the disposable masks, so I decided to create my own,” he said.

He also cited the benefits of his products. “I use velvet material to create my masks. The material is smooth on the skin, and the virus cannot penetrate it,” he explained, adding that they are reusable after being washed. “After washing it, you can sanitize it and use it again. They also come in different styles to suit your outfit,” he explained.

He further explained that the masks are available at between R30 and R40 each, and he delivers in and around the Northriding and Struben’s Valley areas.
