West Rand hero, philanthropist and online sensation dies

Details about JJ's death, and when he passed away, are not clear at this stage.

The West Rand is mourning the loss of a local hero and philanthropist, Jon-Jon Pieterson.

Jon-Jon, or JJ as he was affectionately known, became a online sensation after saving the life of a cyclist who was shot while cycling in the Cradle of Humankind in August 2018.

His incredible will to keep the cyclist alive resonated through the community and province, and he was hailed a hero with a heart of gold.

He was also an avid animal shelter supporter, and generously gave to the SPCA and Friends of Rescued Animals (FORA) on numerous occasions.

His death was announced by both the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA and FORA on their Facebook pages, which resulted in hundreds of comments streaming in with messages of condolences to JJ’s friends and family.
