Local business calls upon Roodepoort community: Let’s stand together

Bringing to a halt the rapid spread of the coronavirus is not just a global challenge.

From national and local governments to public enterprises, from individuals to communities and businesses, the Covid-19 outbreak puts everyone to the test. Bhekani Abantu Services is on a joint mission to save lives, and to save economies.

Aimed at protecting commuters and taxi drivers, the BAS Group’s medical supply division disinfected over 75 taxis. Putting their pledge into action on the 1st of April at 9.30am, a mass ‘fogging’ of all taxis was done at the Rank 5 taxi rank in Roodepoort, of which the nearest landmark is Roodepoort Train Station. Taxis on duty were sanitized with a high-disinfectant wipe-down, followed by a cold-fogging technique which allows protection for 14 days.
BAS MedXpress stepped up by demonstrating basic hygiene techniques to taxi drivers and commuters. This is the company’s way of assisting the government to combat Covid-19; an example of good corporate citizenship and a demonstration of the new technology available in SA to combat the pandemic.

Emphasising the relationship between healthy local communities and healthy businesses, the Roodepoort-born and -based BAS Group launched the ‘Let’s tackle the coronavirus; right here, right now’ campaign. Landus Armstrong, CEO of the Bhekani Abantu Services Group, explains: “Our security, cleaning and medical supply services are working around the clock and allow us to play an active role in the fight against Covid-19. As for any essential business to stay well equipped, a healthy and motivated workforce is crucial. This means taking the health of our employees and their families at heart, with the majority living in and around the greater Roodepoort community.”

The medical supply division of Roodepoort born and based Bhekani Abantu Services works around the clock to help fight COVID-19. “We provide hospitals and essential businesses with the protective gear they need to keep up the good work. And we assist wherever we can with ‘cold fogging’, a mist spray technique we use to disinfect spaces”, says Aidan Bauckaley, General Manager at BASMedXpress.

The control room, located at the head office in Horison, Roodepoort, operates at the centre and serves all divisions. Most communication takes place via a dedicated radio frequency. The control room is manned 24/ 7 and has direct access to the SAPS and JMPD radio rooms.

Besides the main division which focuses on security solutions, including guarding, armed response and technical, the BAS Group has a maintenance division, a cleaning division, a gardening division, a glass division (via ownership of two Glasfit branches), a medical-supply division and a fibre-optics division.

The fulltime staff complement of Bhekani Abantu Services amounts to over 1 200 people, of which approximately 35 are management and support staff.
