Councillor pleads for residents to obey lockdown rules

Desperate ward councillor addresses residents in her ward who are not complying with the lockdown regulations.

As all South Africans know, on 23 March President Cyril Ramaphosa imposed a nation-wide lockdown that was set to last until 16 April, starting at midnight on 26 March. While many people have abided by the regulations outlined in the Government Gazette, a large number of people have not.

Looking after a ward with several old age homes and complexes, the councillor for Ward 83, Florence Roberts, has decided to address residents in her ward that are not complying. Residents are well aware that walking in common areas, jogging, walking dogs, and any situations where you need to leave your house for anything other than essential items and services are strictly prohibited.

Florence started of her plea to residents with the statement, “We simply must do our part to keep ourselves and others safe”.

She expressed her sadness and regret that a few of her residents are not following the regulations, particularly those who live in complexes and retirement villages.

People seem to be looking for loopholes and gaps in the rules, trying to use the common areas to congregate or walk their dogs.

She continued to express her disappointment by saying that stubborn residents seem to prefer being ‘clever’ rather than keeping themselves safe and healthy; subsequently abusing their body corporates and trustees, as well as endangering their neighbours.

“Your behaviour is unacceptable – please do your part,” Florence pleaded.

Covering a very valid point, she went on to explain that the lockdown is temporary, and only by following the rules we can determine how soon it will be over.

As per the regulations, non-compliant residents will be fined.

“I appeal to each of you to do your part. As law-abiding adults, we do not need the police to enforce the rules. Your support and compliance will save each of us,” the councillor concluded.
