Take the lockdown seriously – police

While the regulations allow people to visit essential retail centres, some people seem to have taken advantage of that provision – judging by their large numbers.

While the first week of the national lockdown saw the majority of the citizens confined to their homes, a number of people were still seen on the streets with doubtful intentions.

Residents of Roodepoort vented on their Facebook accounts about non-essential members of society going about their day while many respected the lockdown regulations. While the regulations allow people to visit essential retail centres, some people seem to have taken advantage of that provision – judging by their large numbers.

When Honeydew Police was asked about the dubious behaviour, their spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan said that since the lockdown orders hadn’t come from the station, but from President Cyril Ramaphosa, all should adhere to it.

“In his speech, the President said people need to stay at home, except when you have essential needs. We are using the same message from the President to advise all our residents in and around the Honeydew Policing precinct to take this message seriously and safeguard themselves, their families and everyone around them to minimise movement in order to curb the coronavirus,” Muthan appealed.

The Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) reminded residents that leaving their properties to have a run or walk the dog is not allowed.

Anyone contravening the lockdown regulation can be reported to the nearest police station.
